I am very pleased to introduce myself as the new senior art teacher for The Culture Connection on Long Island. As a native long islander, I understand the importance of the arts especially in our local communities and with today’s youth. I am beyond thrilled to be given the opportunity to help contribute to the culture connection, and am truly excited to provide my students with the tools they need to channel their own individual creativity, explore the history of the arts, and have a fun & fulfilling cultural experience!
Growing up in Port Jefferson Village, I have seen the impact that after school art programs can make. I know first hand from a student perspective and teachers as well. Children become discouraged very easily, causing us to lose our motivation to create and be ourselves. There is this stereotype about fine art that makes us believe we are being held to a standard, and must replicate the art that has already been created once before. This is why here at the culture connection; embracing creative confidence at an early age is crucial. We celebrate each of our students as an individual, where we combine educating traditional techniques and concepts used throughout history with each child’s own creative vision.
We target our educational aspect towards art history, where we explore the mindsets of famous artists from all over the world. I believe before we can look towards the future, we must reflect and understand the past as well. Children who feel that connection to the past begin to have an understanding for the true beauty of art. They begin focusing on how expressing yourself as an individual has been celebrated throughout time, and still to this day as well. We must fully support critical thinking, without it we are missing out on providing todays youth with an entirely different outlook on life through the world of art.
My overall goal for this program is to create a positive and artistically stimulating environment for my students. I strive for positive mindsets only in my class, and to make sure every week is as fun and exciting as the last. For me and every other great artist out there, we believe art isn’t about striving to be the best in the room. Art is about being who you are, and learning how to express that in the best way you can. Being confident about whom we are and the art we make is one of the most important lessons we can learn in life, and that will always be my first and foremost priority while teaching here at the culture connection.
